When Old Wax Needs to Be Stripped from Stone
Yellowing, peeling, trapped moisture, and fast-reappearing dirt can all point to a coating that needs to be removed before restoration.
Why coatings become a problem
Topical waxes, acrylics, polyurethane, and crystallization products sit on top of the stone. As they age, they can yellow, crack, peel, trap moisture, and collect dirt in a way that makes the floor look permanently cloudy.
Adding another coat over the old one makes the buildup thicker and can prevent the natural stone from breathing. Cleaning products may also react unpredictably with a layered finish.
The restoration sequence
Stripping removes the coating so the underlying stone can be evaluated. After the residue is extracted, the surface may need cleaning, honing, polishing, or grinding before a penetrating sealer is considered.
A professional wet process keeps the work controlled and avoids dry dust. Do not assume a shiny floor is protected; a coating can look glossy while the stone underneath remains vulnerable.
