Etching and staining can look similar at first glance, but they are different problems. The right next step depends on the surface and what has happened to it.

Marble etching is not a cleaning problem

A pale ring after a cocktail or a dull patch left by lemon juice can look like a stain. On marble, limestone and other calcium-based stones, acid can react with the surface itself. The resulting change in reflection is an etch. Cleaning harder does not replace the material that was affected, and an ordinary stain-resistant sealer does not stop that surface reaction.

This is why marble countertop protection needs a different conversation from routine sealing. If you have already tried cleaning a mark that will not wipe away, let us assess whether the finish needs restoration first. We can discuss polishing or honing separately from the protection stage, so existing damage is not simply covered without understanding its cause.

Where to consider RAKU No-Etch

Marble kitchen countertops and islands are common places to consider additional protection because food preparation brings citrus, dressings, wine and other acidic liquids close to the stone. Bathroom vanities, dining tables and wet bars have their own exposure patterns. Suitable limestone, travertine and onyx surfaces can also be assessed rather than assumed to behave exactly like marble.

For restaurant counters, hotel surfaces and shared spaces, tell us about cleaning products, daily operating hours and how the surface is used. Outdoor or vertical applications require a separate suitability discussion. An attractive product photograph does not establish suitability for your particular floor, pool edge or shower. Protective films place a physical layer over the stone. Before choosing a film, ask to see the proposed finish and confirm how edges, joints, cleaning, damage and eventual replacement will be handled. Appearance and maintenance depend on the specific system and installation.

UV-cured coatings are professionally applied surface treatments that use ultraviolet curing equipment. Ask about preparation, the finished look and feel, access around sinks and fixtures, and the care and repair requirements for the particular coating. Do not assume all coatings have the same installation process or coverage.

Photos of the full surface and close-ups of dull marks help frame the discussion, but an on-site assessment may still be necessary. We review existing sealers or coatings and identify any cleaning, repairs, honing or polishing needed before the protection stage.

Next we explain the proposed system, appearance expectations, access requirements and care instructions. Application and return-to-use timing are confirmed for your project rather than promised from another company's schedule. Use the cleaning products and methods recommended for your installed system, wipe spills promptly, and use suitable pads, boards and trivets. Do not assume that a protective treatment makes abrasive scrubbers, acidic cleaners or direct hot cookware harmless. Ask for instructions covering both the coating and the underlying stone, particularly where a housekeeping or restaurant team will maintain it.

For direct food-contact use, request applicable written product documentation. Durability, exclusions and any coverage must come from your project's written terms; a manufacturer's general description is not a universal warranty from Elite Marble Care.
