Should You Seal Stone After Deep Cleaning?
Cleaning opens the conversation about sealing because a clean, dry surface allows a penetrating sealer to absorb more consistently.
Cleaning and sealing do different jobs
Deep cleaning removes soil, stains, bacteria, and embedded residue. Sealing reduces how quickly liquids enter porous stone. One does not replace the other.
Sealing over dirt or old wax can trap residue and create uneven absorption. The surface needs to be clean and fully dry before a penetrating product is applied.
When sealing makes sense
Porous marble, travertine, limestone, and grout often benefit from a sealer after restoration. Countertops, showers, and entryways may need more frequent checks because they see water and traffic.
A professional can test absorption and recommend the right product instead of sealing every surface on an arbitrary schedule. A sealer will not repair etching, scratches, or lippage.
