How to Test Whether Your Marble Needs Sealing
A simple water test can show whether a porous stone is still repelling moisture, but it cannot replace a professional inspection.
The water-drop test
Choose a clean, inconspicuous area and place a few drops of water on the stone. Leave them undisturbed for several minutes, then wipe the surface and compare the test area with the surrounding stone. If the water quickly darkens the stone or absorbs into the pores, the protection may be depleted.
Do not perform this test on a freshly restored surface or on a stone where water could reach unfinished wood, grout, or a sensitive substrate. The test is a useful screening step, not a guarantee of uniform coverage.
What sealing can and cannot do
A penetrating sealer reduces absorption and gives you more time to wipe up spills. It does not add a permanent film, create a mirror shine, or repair scratches and etching. Those concerns belong to polishing, honing, or grinding.
The right sealer and schedule depend on porosity, traffic, cleaning habits, and whether the surface is a countertop, floor, shower, or patio. Professional application helps ensure the stone is clean and dry before the sealer is applied.
