Grinding vs. Honing for Deep Scratches and Lippage
Grinding removes deeper damage and uneven tile edges; honing refines a surface that is already level but needs a softer finish.
When grinding is necessary
Grinding uses coarse diamond abrasives to remove a controlled layer of stone. It is the right starting point for deep scratches, significant lippage, widespread wear, and surfaces that are too uneven for polishing pads to follow consistently.
The process is performed wet with slurry collection, so the work is dust-free. After the floor is level, the technician moves through honing and polishing steps to create the finish you selected.
When honing is enough
Honing is a refining step. It smooths minor wear and etching without creating a high-gloss reflection, making it a good choice when the floor is level and the goal is a satin or matte appearance.
Trying to hone a badly uneven floor can leave the low spots dull and the high spots overworked. An in-person inspection helps determine how much material needs to be removed and avoids unnecessary grinding.
