How to Protect a Marble Countertop from Acid Etching
Fast spill response, stone-safe cleaning, smart prep habits, and optional anti-etch protection help keep marble looking intentional.
Change the daily habits
Keep a soft cloth nearby for citrus, wine, vinegar, tomato, and coffee. Use cutting boards and trays under acidic foods, and do not let a wet glass sit on the same spot for hours.
Clean with a neutral stone product rather than a household spray that contains acid or abrasive particles. Small habits prevent a large refinishing conversation.
When to add protection
If the kitchen sees frequent acid exposure, ask about an anti-etch treatment after any existing dull spots are corrected. It is different from sealing and should be selected for the stone and finish.
No treatment makes marble invulnerable. Prompt cleanup remains the most effective protection, while polishing or honing restores the surface when etching has already occurred.
