Granite and Marble Polishing: Are They the Same?
Both materials can be polished, but their hardness, mineral structure, and response to acid mean the restoration process is not identical.
Similar goal, different material
Professional polishing refines a surface with abrasives and compounds, but granite is generally harder and marble is more vulnerable to etching. The tooling, pressure, and sequence must be matched to the stone.
A product that adds shine to one material may leave residue or an uneven result on another. Identification comes before the finish choice.
What both surfaces need
Clean the surface, remove damaging grit, and address scratches or stains before chasing reflection. A consistent result comes from working across the affected area rather than rubbing only the visible spot.
Sealing supports stain resistance for both materials, while marble kitchens may also benefit from an anti-etch conversation because a sealer alone does not stop acid damage.
