Stone Cleaning vs. Polishing: What Is the Difference?

Cleaning removes material on top

Deep cleaning targets dirt, bacteria, stains, soap residue, and embedded waxes or polymers. It can dramatically improve a floor that is dirty but otherwise sound.

Cleaning should use products and agitation appropriate to the stone. It cannot recreate a polish that has been worn away or reverse acid damage.

Polishing rebuilds reflection

Polishing uses abrasives and compounds to refine the stone surface and restore sheen. It is the right conversation for dull spots, worn finish, and light etching after the surface is clean.

If deep scratches, lippage, or widespread damage remain, grinding or honing may need to precede polishing. A clear diagnosis avoids paying for the wrong shortcut.
