How Water Damages Porous Natural Stone
Water can carry minerals, darken porous stone, and expose weak sealing. Good ventilation and a suitable penetrating sealer reduce the risk.
Water is not always harmless
Repeated moisture can carry minerals into pores and leave hard-water deposits when it evaporates. On a porous surface, darkening may indicate absorption rather than a simple surface spill.
Showers, entryways, countertops, and outdoor patios see more water exposure than a decorative wall. The maintenance plan should reflect that use.
Reduce the opportunity for absorption
Dry standing water, improve ventilation, and use a penetrating sealer that is appropriate for the stone. Sealer slows absorption but does not stop water from sitting on the surface forever.
If moisture is coming from below, behind the tile, or through a failed joint, surface treatment alone will not solve it. Investigate the source before refinishing.
