Common Mistakes During the Water Sealing Test
A water test is useful only when the surface is clean, dry, and tested in more than one representative area.
Avoid a misleading result
Testing over soap, oil, wax, or cleaning residue can make water bead when the stone is not consistently protected. Testing a single repaired spot can also miss absorption elsewhere.
Use a clean, hidden area and compare several locations with similar use. Let the water sit for a few minutes, then wipe and observe darkening or absorption.
Interpret the result carefully
A failed test means the surface deserves an inspection, not that you should immediately apply any sealer from a hardware shelf. Product compatibility, moisture, and old coatings all matter.
A professional can clean or restore the surface first, then recommend a penetrating sealer and a realistic recheck schedule.
